Gateway to the Perigord: Bergerac

Bergerac is a town located 92 kilometers to the east of Bordeaux and 40 kilometers south of Perigueux, in the Dordogne department

The region is primarily known for wine and tobacco and Bergerac offers some of the finest wines in the Bordeaux region.

Bergerac Museums:

These museums are small but can be of interest to the visitor.

The Maison des Vins is where you can learn more about the local wines in the 16th century cloisters of the recollects. The Bergerac Museum explains the development of Bergerac, mostly in terms of the Dordogne and rivers, and the wine trade. The Costi Museum features the sculptures of Greek sculptor Constantin Papachristopoulos (1906-2004).The Tobacco Museum on Rue St Claire tells the history of the tobacco industry in and around Bergerac. Bergerac Castles:

These castles are mostly within the 20km radius of the town center.

Chateau Monbazillac is best known for the sweet white wine produced here. Chateau Lanquias is a half medieval, half renaissance picturesque castle in a wooded location above the Dordogne River. Chateau Bannes dating from the 16th century is one of the most impressive castles in the region. Chateau Duras is a 17th century chateau with an interior courtyard one can enjoy.

Bergerac airport is only a few kilometers to the west of Bergerac and is one of the ‘budget airline’ destinations. Ryanair and FlyBe are the main airlines that fly into Bergerac.
